Our Mission

The mission of the Cornhusker Shooting Stars Basketball program is to organize and administer a highly competitive and instructional basketball program for athletes. Athletes will compete against highly competitive teams in state, regional and national competition. This will provide female athletes the opportunity to become leaders through hard work, based on commitment, desire, and talent; not on their financial status. The program will always demand good sportsmanship from players, parents, and coaches.

Coaching Philosophy

We strive to challenge our players to their maximum potential in practice and in games. We only play in tournaments that will be competitive; most often that means traveling is required. Our record is not our first concern. We believe players learn more from losing by ten points to a great team than beating a less competitive team by thirty. The club strives to find the best competition and to challenge players each and every time they step on the court.

In the CSS program we strive to challenge our players to their maximum potential in practices and games. Our Goal is to make the player a complete athlete. Our renewed focus is on personal improvement, game knowledge/decision making and team play, with less stress on the outcome of games.

Rachel Schwartz (Lincoln East 2005) University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Volleyball) I played for the Cornhusker shooting stars for about seven years. It wasnt always easy. I didnt play when I first came, but I never gave up, and eventually I turned into a starter. When you want something it doesnt come easy, it comes at a price, and for sports usually its hard work. I learned that here while participating in the Cornhusker Shooting Stars program. This program is one of the greatest memories, and one of the best things that ever happened to me. Here is where I gained confidence to perform and to chase my dreams, not only in sports, but in life. You get out of it what you put into it, I put a lot in, but I think that I gained more from it. I have many memories of the wins, all the trophies that hang on my wall are a great reminder, but perhaps the most fond memories that I have are the relationships that I developed while on one of the best programs in the nation. I met some of my best friends here, and some of the greatest mentors in my life. Dan Lesoing has been an inspiration to me, he and I may not always agree, nor when I was playing with him did I always like him at times, but I always respected and trusted him. Trust and love are the cornerstones to make a Great team, and this is one of the best examples in sports. If you want to chase a dream, if you want to play college basketball then there is no other place for you. I play volleyball for the University of Nebraska, and I can tell you that in the CSS basketball gym was where it all started. I love basketball, and I love this program, it doesnt matter what age you are; it is never to early nor to late to start the greatest journey of your life.

Ashley Ford (Lincoln Northeast-2003) University of Nebraska I began playing for Dan when I was in the sixth grade and played for the Cornhusker Shooting Stars until the summer after my senior year. I credit Dan and my experience with the CSS for my growth as an individual as well as a basketball player. The travels, competition, friendships and memories I have with the program are invaluable Dans guidance has helped me with not only my basketball career, but in my choices in life as well. I credit Dan for teaching me to have the work ethic I have today and to never let obstacles push you away from you dreams. As a young girl with the dream of playing division I basketball, I feel that Dan prepared me for the hard work and dedication that it takes to play at that level. WOW, those practices were something else. If you arent giving the effort Dan knows you could give, he is on you because you are just cheating yourself. What I like about Dan is that he can see talent, but he would take a player that works hard and wants to learn, as easily as he would the talented player.

Marissa Kastanek (Lincoln Southeast 2009) North Carolina State The Cornhusker Shooting Stars made me into a great basketball player but an even better person. I did receive a full ride scholarship thanks to this program and the exposure that is got me. I played for this club from the summer going into my sixth grade year to the summer going into my senior year. Over the years I excelled in many aspects of the game. I became a smarter player. I learned how to never give up because the game is long and there are many changes. I learned how to be a teammate. Dan taught me basketball skills but I think the the life lessons he taught me in the process will get me much farther. In practices and games I learned many lessons; responsibility, leadership, accountability, hard work, and reliability. I will take these lessons with me in the future. If you want to reach maximum levels in basketball and in life then this program is the spot for you. It has helped many young ladies dreams come true.

Eva Benson (Overton 2008) Evansville University The Cornhusker Shooting Stars basketball program is defiantly the best in Nebraska for improving athletic skills as well as personal growth. I played for the Cornhusker Shooting Stars for two summers, and I will never regret the time I spent away from my friends and family. Every time I went to a practice I knew that I would be challenged physically and mentally on the court. It was the best experience of my life and I got to share it with many other girls with similar goals who are now my close friends. To excel in this program you not only have to better yourself as an athlete, you also have to develop a strong work ethic and show great character. I have many memories and friends within the program that I will never forget and still keep in touch with. Thanks to Dan I have had the opportunity to play in many major tournaments in front of college coaches from all over the United States. I come from a very small town in central Nebraska where this type of exposure would not have been possible without the Cornhusker Shooting Stars. I appreciate the opportunity the Cornhusker Shooting Stars gave me to achieve my goals.

McKenzie Fujan (Wahoo Bishop Neuman 2010) Creighton University I started with the Shooting Stars in 6th grade and played for six years. I learned alot about basketball and alot about dedication and teamwork. I will say it was very hard, but I had great fun with my teammates and made many lasting friendships during my time with the Stars. I was able to play on our basketball team all 4 years in high school, I was part of two State Championship teams and one State Runner-Up team and I was able to earn a Division 1 basketball scholarship to Creighton University. Achieving your goals takes alot of dedication, hardwork and perseverance. The Cornhusker Shooting Stars program teaches you this, it isn't easy but it's worth it. I want to thank Dan and Zach and all the coaches in the Stars program for helping me to learn alot about success in basketball, sports and life. I would recommend the Stars program to anyone who wants to be the best that they can be.

Emily Cady (Seward High School 2011) University of NebraskaI started playing for the Stars in 3rd grade and my life has changed ever since. I would not be where I am today without this program. Because of this program and Dan I was able to receive a full ride scholarship to UNL. This program molded me into not only a great basketball player but also a great person. Dan has taught us how to take responsibility for our actions, molded me into a better leader on and off of the court, and many other things that will help me out in other aspects besides basketball. This program gave me an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything, I got to travel all around the states, I had the chance to meet and bond with people from all over the states and those teammates became my best friends and I talk to them more than I talk to the people I went to high school with because we spend that much time together. The CSS program became a second family to me and kind of an outlet for the stress of school and somewhere where we could go to have fun and get work done. This program has the ability to make you the best person and basketball player that you can be and if I could I would do it all over again.

Amy Gallagher (Neligh-Oakdale 2006) Evansville University My decision to try out for the Cornhusker Shooting Stars was the best decision I ever made. I played with CSS for three summers and I got everything I wanted out of it and more. This program pushed me to reach my goals and helped my lifelong dreams possible. Not only did the CSS program earn myself and several other girls Division 1 scholarships, but I have so many fun memories to look back on with all my teammates that I am still very close with to this day. I recommend the Cornhusker Shooting Star program to any girl who has a desire to play college basketball because this program is intense and will definitely make you better if you bring along the right attitude and mindset. This program opened up several doors for me and gave me opportunities that I would not have found anywhere else. Jasmine Johnson(Omaha Central HS) University of Houston The past two years of my life has been the greatest learning experience for me ever as a player and a person. Playing for the Cornhusker Shooting Stars made me better as a player because it forced me, and I do mean forced!!, to reach my goals. I don't mean forced as if I were forced to play for this club because it was totally my decision, but it made me WANT to work hard everyday twice a day to get what I wanted out of it! It taught me to be mentally tough, except constructive criticism, be strong with the ball, and to work together as a team. If you didn't have that urge to get after if then there was really no point of going through the pain. But its is so worth it because working everyday twice a day puts you two steps ahead of everyone else. This part of my experience has taken me to another level and got me the looks and offers that I never thought I'd have. I learned a tremendous amount as a person as well. It taught me how to learn, teach, trust and do things for my team because it is expected whether you want to do it or not. My first summer was different from what I have been accustomed to. I wasn't uncomfortable, but the statement I made was " I've never been around this many white people in my entire life!!" I have grown to love all people for who they are and the qualities that they have and not the color of their skin. Everyone is different, but if you stay positive and put a smile on your face nothing could go wrong that can't be fixed. One of the most important things that I've learned is that it you do something because it's just the right thing to do, it turns out better than you expected. I played in a tournament in Kansas on the Judds team (Sept 31st- Oct 1st) and there was no doubt that I wanted to play with Bison, but I enjoyed my experience and learned a lot from playing with such a great group of kids...it taught me leadership. I wouldn't trade my experience being apart of this club ever and I encourage the youth to be apart if the opportunity is presented.

I learned so much from the program: a great work ethic, maintaining a positive attitude, andalso, I learned from the other players on the program who are now my life-long friends. The memories are unforgettable. There are numerous opportunities offered from the Cornhusker Shooting Star program. We had the chance to improve our basketball skills any day of the week, play with the best playersin Nebraska, and perform in national tournaments in front of college coaches from any level of competition. I learned so much from this program; it prepared me mentally and physically for college level competition but also I developed valuable characteristics for the real life thanks to this program

Amy Pleskac(Wahoo Bishop Neumann) Briar CliffThe Cornhusker Shooting Stars program has shaped me into the player and person that I am today. Had it not been for this program, I would be playing at nowhere near the level that I am today. I started the program as a seventh grader, and have worked with several coaches on the staff. All of them worked extremely hard to help me achieve my goals and to make me the best player that I could be. I learned that the time, commitment, hard work and dedication that the program takes are all worth it. I learned so much from the coaches both on and of the court. One thing that I especially appreciate is that I learned to evaluate myself-- to maintain my strengths and improve upon my weaknesses. Joining this program was one of the best decisions of my life. Not only did it help me on the court, but it has also helped me to become a better person. I learned the meaning of hard work and mental toughness. I also learned the value of teamwork. There were many games when the other team was much more talented and athletic that we were, but we came away with the win because we worked hard and we worked as a team, not as individual athletes.The people I met and worked with made the experience all the more enjoyable. I became good friends with many of the athletes, still communicate with many of them, and one of my former teammates is one of my best friends today. I strongly recommend this program to any young athlete who wants to become the best basketball player that he or she can be. It's a great opportunity to get exposure to colleges; most of the girls who come out of this program are offered college scholarships, many at the D1 level. As long as an athlete is willing to put forth his or her best effort and attitude, these coaches will do their best to make it happen!

Maggie Schmaderer(Hastings High School) Hastings College I was involved with the Cornhusker Shooting Stars for four years. During those years, I was given the opportunity to play with and against some of the best players in the nation. While playing for the Stars, I learned the importance of a good work ethic, knowing that I had to work hard for everything. The fast-paced game and the 'in-your-face' defense that was in forced by the coaching staff truly prepared me for the level at which the college game is played. Also, I had the opportunity to travel the nation and see many places while doing something that I loved. I started playing for the team right after my sophomore year of high school. Because of the shooting stars, I had the opportunity to play against some of the best competition and to get recruited by many schools. The practices have prepared me both physically and mentally for college basketball. When I came to UNK, I was prepared for anything because I had experienced a coach who would demand your all during a 6 hour practice. I can say for sure that if you play for Dan Lesoing then you will become a better basketball player. Those 3 years of playing for the program gave me the opportunity to play competitive basketball and show me my passion for basketball

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much does it cost to try out?

A. No there is no cost to try out but if selected to a team you will have a cost to be a member of the team?

Q. When will I know if my son/daughter has made a team?

A. Right away at the conclusion of tryouts we post all of the rosters for the teams

Q. What does the cost of being on a team cover

A. If you son/daughter is in 6th grade or up everything for the player (use of a uniform, players hotel room, travel to the tournament, & food for a tournament with the team) is covered. If your son/daughter is in 4th or 5th grade the cost covers the use of a uniform but the parents are responsible for the child at tournaments.

Q. What are the requirments from the parents

A. Parents are required to work at least one CSS hosted tournament as this helps keep the costs of the club low. Parents are also required to be a host parent for one away tournament per season.

Q. What is your policy when it comes to attendance?

A. In the youth program player's are required to make 75% of all practices. If a players attendance drops below 75% they have to sit a game at a tournament for every 5% they are below 75%. High school teams have a different attendance policy than youth teams.

Alexa Kastanek Commites to IowaThe first school to offer Alexa Kastanek a women's basketball scholarship ended up being the last one standing.The Lincoln Southeast junior all-state guard announced Thursday she has orally committed to Iowa, which first offered Kastanek when she was an eighth-grader. The 5-foot-8 Kastanek chose the Hawkeyes over Nebraska, Colorado and North Carolina State, where her older sister, Marissa, is a junior starting guard and all-conference candidate."Iowa's been there from the beginning, and that set them apart," said Alexa Kastanek, who will sign her national letter of intent in November of 2012."They've stuck with me through all the ups and downs and believed in me that I'll improve and be able to help their program."The multi-faceted Kastanek was a second-team Super-Stater as a sophomore, when she averaged 14.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game, leading the Knights to the Class A state tournament.Despite foul trouble that limited her minutes, she still scored 13 points as the third-ranked Knights (3-1) lost 59-55 at No. 1 Omaha Central on Saturday.While Kastanek said it was difficult telling the other three universities of her decision, turning down the hometown school and her sister's program were especially tough."When I told Marissa, she was happy for me and very supportive," she said. "It's been hard following her because she's such an amazing player. In high school and club, I had to follow her. But college was my choice and I wanted to go where I could be out there on my own."Nebraska has commitments from two of her Cornhusker Shooting Stars teammates -- Seward junior all-state guard Hannah Tvrdy and Southeast freshman center Jess Shepard.But for Kastanek, "I wanted to get away from home, but still be close enough that my family can get to my games," said Alexa, who plans to major in psychology at Iowa. "There were no cons about Nebraska. The coaches, the players and the facilities are all great. Hannah TvrdyCommits to Nebraska With a new conference, a new state-of-the-art practice facility and a new arena scheduled to open in two years, this is not your mother's Nebraska women's basketball program.All the more reason Seward junior guard Hannah Tvrdy orally committed to the Huskers over the weekend, following in the footsteps of her mom, the former Shelly Block, who played at NU from 1983-87."It's cool to think I can play for the same school as my mom and experience what she did," said Tvrdy, whose father, Tom, coaches the Seward girls basketball team. "I know she's excited for me and happy that I'll be playing close to home."She'll also be reunited with former Seward Super-Stater Emily Cady, now a freshman for the Huskers. Tvrdy and Cady were also Cornhusker Shooting Star teammates in the summer. Another Shooting Star, Lincoln Southeast freshman Jessica Shepard, committed to NU in September.Two other Shooting Stars -- Southeast junior guard Alexa Kastanek and Shelby sophomore Chatrice White -- also have Husker scholarship offers, but have not made their college decisions."Emily is awesome, and I loved playing with her the last two years," Hannah Tvrdy said. "It will be fun to see what happens those two years I get to play with her again."Seward, winner of 75 straight games, has captured the last three Class B state championships. Tvrdy started as a freshman and sophomore, earning second-team all-state honors last season after averaging 12.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.Tvrdy made visits to Colorado, Colorado State, Drake, Creighton, Northwestern and Wisconsin-Green Bay this fall. She received the offer from Nebraska when she was on campus Friday."I've always wanted to play for Nebraska, the new practice facilities are amazing, I love the players and coaches and they play in a big-time (Big Ten) conference," Tvrdy said. "There was no reason to wait (to commit)."Now Tvrdy can focus on helping the Bluejays extend their string of victories and state championships."This takes a lot of pressure off," Tvrdy said. "Now I can relax and enjoy my two years of high school ball and last year of summer ball."

Jess Shepard Commits to Nebraska Lincoln Southeast freshman Jess Shepard's first high school girls basketball game is still more than three months away, and she's already committed to a NCAA Division I school.On an unofficial visit to Nebraska last Thursday, the 6-foot-2 Shepard committed to the Huskers shortly after NU coach Connie Yori offered a scholarship. It's the earliest commitment Yori has received during her time at Nebraska.Shepard and her parents met with Yori, and Shepard's long-term dream of being a Husker became a reality."I told Coach Yori I've always wanted to go to school at Nebraska, and my dad (Mark Shepard) asked me 'is that a commitment?''' said Jess Shepard, who won't arrive on campus until the 2015-16 season. "And I said 'yes.' I've been going to Nebraska games since I was little. This is something I've wanted for a long time.''Shepard, a small forward, caught the attention of numerous Division I coaches this summer playing both on her freshman Cornhusker Shooting Stars team and the CSS/Bison high school select squad, which ended up ranked by ESPN HoopGurlz No. 21 nationally.She took an unofficial visit earlier this summer to Colorado, and she was getting interest from Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Drake, Northern Iowa and Rice. Her father said she was getting two to three letters from schools every day in the mail."I think it's good,'' Mark Shepard said about the early commitment. "The recruiting process can get pretty intense, and this takes that pressure off.''The commitment is reminiscent of Papillion-La Vista South Super-State volleyball players Kadie and Amber Rolfzen committing to Nebraska two years ago before their freshman season. Since then, the Rolfzen twins have led the Titans to an undefeated Class A state championship, won a national club championship and played for the U.S. youth team at the world championships."I think Jess can have the same impact on basketball in Nebraska as the Rolfzen twins have had in volleyball,'' said Shooting Stars coach Dan Lesoing, who has had Shepard in his program for five years. "If she keeps working hard, she has the chance to be a very special player.''Two other Shooting Stars -- junior all-state guard Alexa Kastanek of Southeast and sophomore all-state forward Chatrice White of Shelby -- have scholarship offers from Nebraska. The Huskers also have offered Bellevue East Super-State guard Jayla Hobza, a junior.Shepard comes from a family filled with basketball accomplishments. Her mother, the former Kim Bennett, was an all-state player at Lincoln Christian. Her father, now associate superintendent for business affairs with Lincoln Public Schools, coached the Dawson-Verdon boys program to its only state tournament berth, in 1989.Jess Shepard's older sister, Taylor, is a freshman on the Minnesota State-Moorhead women's basketball team. Her older brother, Clayton, started last season as a sophomore for the Lincoln East boys varsity team.Her grandfather Wes Shepard and two of her uncles -- Scott and Greg Shepard -- coached the Lincoln Christian boys teams to state championships.
